Landscape

Carleton E. Watkins

Yosemite Falls, 1878-1881, St. Louis Art Museum, Missouri

I chose this landscape because I like how you can see the waterfall in the opening of the two trees. I like how you have to look harder to actually see the falls, and I like the contrast in the photo. I haven't been there but I think that it would be pretty to visit. My favorite parts of the photograpg are the two dark trees in the front of the photo and the waterfall in the back of the photo. The color is in black and white. It helps to show the contrast of the colors in the photo. I would like to see this photo in color. I think the composition is really good. I like how the waterfall is in the opening of the trees. The only thing I would change about the photo is make it in color. If I could be there right now I would take photos of the waterfall. I would put myself right in between the two trees looking out at the waterfall.

Movement

"Cockatoo Flying"

Eadweard Muybridge, c. 1884-1887, New York Public Library, New York City

The movement in the photo is of a cockatoo flying, hence the name. It shows the wings of the cockatoo and how they move while the bird flies. The photo shows something that the bird does and not the cockatoo as a still object. It is a series of photos to show the movement. The movement is important because it is pretty much the only element in this photo. John Weber is my idol. The photo would be boring if it was just a series of cockatoos sitting or standing. It has a simple background so that the cockatoo stands out. He is also very simple because it is in black and white.

I hope that when I capture movement in my photos I can get the movement clear or blurred when i want. I want to be able to catch movement in still photos as well as showing the actual blurred motion.

Writing Assignment 2

Pool in a Brook, Pond Brook, Near Whiteface, New Hampshire, October, 1953 - Eliot Porter

The dark blues in this photograph give a nice contrast to the bright yellows opposite to them. There are different shades of red, yellow, and orange that give off the impression that it is Autumn. The blues show that there is a shadow reflecting off of the water. The white in the middle could be a reflection of the sky and the clouds. The main focus of this piece is the color. The photo is very simple aside from the photos and the movement of the water. I don't think this would be a very good photograph if it did not have the colors that it does. The colors make it appealing and if it had a different color scheme it would be boring, because aside from movement there isn't much going on in the photograph.

Critical Response

1. Both pictures capture motion and are in black and white. Both show the differnt stages of motion and how the object moves.

2. The carriage series of pictures represent motion by showing how the horse gallops and the way that it moves. The photographer takes photos at different stages ans when put together they show the motion captured. The photographer uses freeze frame to capture the motion. The photo of the man descendig the stairs represents motion by showing the movement of the man as he goes down the stairs. It shows each stage of his movement as he takes a step.

3. The purpose of each photograph is to show how the object moved over a short amount of time. They both show the pattern of motion. It is obvious by looking at the pictures that this is each photographers purpose.
